Opal J. (Latimer) Messersmith

Opal J. Messersmith, age 78, of Shelby, died Friday, June 17, 2011 at Med Central Shelby Hospital.

She was born August 20, 1932 in Greenwich, Ohio the daughter of the late Norris and Gladys D. (Weber) Latimer. Opal was a former employee of AKRO Corporation in Shelby and after her retirement, she worked for 14 years at East of Chicago Pizza in Shelby. She enjoyed bingo, crossword puzzles, fishing, crocheting and playing horseshoes. She was a member of Shelby American Legion #326, and a life member of Shelby VFW #291.

Opal is survived by her children: Diana (James) Haley of Shelby, Debra (Don) Adkins of Crestline, Richard Jr. (Sheila) Messersmith of Shelby, Kim Messersmith (Kevin Wappner) of Shelby, Randie (John) Boyer of Shelby; 10 grandchildren including a special grandson and caregiver, Heath Messersmith; 13 great grandchildren; a sister: Marie Gullett of Shelby. She was preceded in death by: her parents, her husband: Richard Messersmith, Sr. in 2001, a sister: Lois Irene Latimer, a son: Ross Allen Adkins, a grandson: Donald Adkins, Jr.

Friends may call on Sunday, June 19, 2011 from 2-4 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 10 AM with Rev. Thomas Snyder, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Memorial expressions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.
