Myrtle Strouse (Broughton) Butterfield

Myrtle Strouse Butterfield, age 105, of 51 Second Street, Shelby, died Wednesday afternoon in the Crestwood Care Center after a short illness. She was born July 30, 1890 in Huron County, Ohio the daughter of Acey and Maria (Saunders) Broughton.

Mrs. Butterfield was a homemaker. She passed the state teachers examination at the age of 17 and taught in one room school houses in Huron County until her marriage in 1913 to Sherman Strouse. She was proud of her 71 year membership of the First Christian Church in Shelby. The former Sunday school superintendent was the church’s oldest member.

She is survived by 1 son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Nancy Strouse of Shelby; 1 daughter and 2 sons-in-law, Marilyn and Carl F. DeWitt of Shelby and John J. Fisher of Mansfield. 3 grandsons; 7 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson.

Mrs. Butterfield was preceded in death by her first husband Sherman Strouse in 1964, her second husband, Wilbert Butterfield in 1978, and by a daughter, Corinne Fisher in 1986.

There will be no calling hours. Private funeral services will be held on Friday at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby, with Rev. Earl D. Luginbuhl, interim pastor of the First Chritian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby.
