Melinda Alice (Conn) Howerton

M. Alice Howerton, age 86, of 95 Park Village, Shelby, died late Friday evening, September 11, 1998 at Med Central Shelby Hospital after a short illness.

Mrs. Howerton was born March 11, 1912 in Elliott County, Kentucky, the daughter of Tillman and Laura (Osborn) Conn. Mrs. Howerton retired in 1974 from the Standard Tube Company after 27 years of service. She attended the Tiro United Baptist Church. She was a member of the Ladies Aid at the church and A.A.R.P. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, reading, crocheting afghans, and reading and writing poetry.

She is survived by 3 daughters and sons-in-law: Glen and Anna M. Gayheart of Shelby, Garnis and Sally Hall of Shelby, and Robert and Laura DeLay of Mechanicsburg, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Myrtle Stuthard of Ocala, Florida and Janice Simmons of Trenton, Michigan; a best friend Emily Gearheart of Shelby, other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Howerton in June 1973; 1 brother, Jimmy Conn; and 6 sisters: Gladys Johnson, Mae Hubbard, Opal Carter, Linnie Lewis, Doris Conn, and Dorothy Conn.

Calling hours will be on Monday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby, where the funeral will be held on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Claude Compton and Rev. S.T. Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Memorials may be made to the Tiro United Baptist Church or to the Arthritis Foundation.
