Mattie M. (Howard) Payne
Mattie M. (Howard) Payne, age 86, of Shelby, died Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the Mifflin Care Center in Mansfield.
Mattie was born on March 2, 1923 in Harlan County, KY. She was the daughter of the late Edward W. and Mossie May (Brock) Howard. She was a member of the Rizpah Chapter 153 Order of the Eastern Star in Shelby and the Stiving Road Freewill Baptist Church.
Mattie is survived by 1 daughter, Mossie Sue Payne, of Shelby; 2 daughters-in-law: Ethel Payne, of Shelby, Wilma Payne, of Howard, OH; 8 grandchildren: Tabitha Payne & Doug Hocker, of Howard, Wanda & Derrin Roberts, of Shelby, Carey & David Richey, of Nashville, TN, Natalie Payne, of Maryland, Jayme Marie Payne, of Shelby, Andrea & Aaron Heist, of Maryland, James Michael Bruce Payne, of Shelby, William Saylor, of Shelby; 12 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: James & Margaret Howard, of Shelby, Edward Ray & Linda Howard, of Louisville, KY; 3 sisters, Twila Foster, of Manchester, TN, Birdie McKnight, Lexington, KY, and Faye Dodge, Louisville, KY. She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Payne in 1996; twin daughters, Joyce & Wanda Payne; 3 sons, James H. Payne, Jr. in 2001, Michael L. Payne in 2005, Bruce G. Payne in 2007; a grandson, Johnny Ray Saylor Payne in 1989; 1 brother, Earl Howard; 4 sisters, Beulah May Hall, and Bessie Richmond, and 2 infants.
Friends may call on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM, at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where Eastern Star services will be held at 7:45 PM. Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 11 AM at the Stiving Road Freewill Baptist Church with the Reverends Roger Keen and Aaron Howard officiating.
