Mary “Maxine” (Steffee) Thomas
Mary Maxine (Steffee) Thomas, age 77, of Shelby, died Monday, August 10, 2009 at her home.
She was born May 13, 1932 in Perry Township Richland County, the daughter of the late John and Rhea (McCrory) Steffee. Maxine was a 1950 graduate of Crestline High School and was a former employee of Wilken’s Air Force Depot. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Shelby, Daughters of the American Revolution, a Girl Scout Leader for 15 years, and was a Junior Achievement leader for many years. Her hobbies included candle making and ceramics. For 40 years, along with her husband Paul, she would set up at candle and ceramic shows all across Ohio. She was an avid genealogist for over 40 years, tracing her family roots back to 1562.
Maxine’s first priority was her family. She lovingly doted on her husband, Paul Eugene Thomas whom she married on, April 9, 1954; Her daughters, Becky Bertke, of Shelby, and Terri Thomas, of Crestline; granddaughter, Sarah Bertke and Sam Schumacher, of Columbus; brother, John Nelson Steffee, of Crestline. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Sue Thomas in 1957.
Friends may call on Thursday, August 13, 2009 from 1-3 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 AM with Rev. Steven C. Bond officiating. Burial will be in Shauck Cemetery in Johnsville, Ohio. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio or the First Lutheran Church, Shelby.
