Mary Esther (Stroup) Reed
Mary Esther Reed, age 86, of 632 Bendle Avenue, Shelby, died Thursday, March 22, 2001 at Med Central Mansfield Hospital after a short illness.
She was born August 16, 1914 in Shelby, the daughter of John J. and Myrtle B. (Nelson) Stroup. Mary was a graduate of Shelby High School and began her working career at the Wilkins Air
Force Depot until it closed. She then worked at the Shelby Mutual Insurance Company until her retirement. Following her retirement, she worked as the bookkeeper for her son Mark at Stevenson’s Drug Store. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she had been Sunday School Secretary for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge and crocheting blankets for the Linus Program, which helps abused children. She was also a Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Mary had a wonderful heart and continued to donate her time and talents to those in need up until the time of her death. She will be missed by many.
She is survived by a son and 2 daughters-in-law: Mark and Pam Reed of Shelby, and Kathy Reed of Shelby; 6 grandchildren and spouses: Mike and Brenda Reed, Michele and Scott Whittemore, Marcia and Ryan Zahn, Dwain Reed, Tom Reed, John Reed; 5 great-grandchildren: Jacob and Joseph Zahn, Joshua and Jesseca Whittemore, and Tristan Reed.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph E. Reed in 1977; a son David T. Reed in 1992; a brother Ross Stroup; and a sister Florence Baird.
Calling hours will be on Friday from 6-8PM and Saturday from 9-10 AM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Saturday at the funeral home conducted by Rev. Jeff Matthews. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Shelby Home and Public Health.
