Martha Rose (Durnwald) Gwirtz

Martha Rose Gwirtz, 85, of 18 N. Long St. Shelby, died unexpectedly Monday, March 12, 2001 at Med Central Shelby Hospital. She was born June 29, 1915 in New Washington, the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine [Mehnen] Durnwald.

Mrs. Gwirtz had worked as a waitress and cashier at the Coffee Shop in Shelby for 30 years. She was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Altar Rosary Society, Eagles auxiliary, Women of the Moose, and AARP, all in Shelby. She was an avid Bingo player.

Surviving are 3 sons: Howard E. and Joyce Gwirtz, and James F. and Eileen Gwirtz, both of Crestline, and David L. Gwirtz and his fiancé Sally Gilliam of Shelby; 1 daughter and son in law, Virginia Kay and Robert Pelfrey of Amlin, Ohio. 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; and 4 step-great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard F. Gwirtz in 1994; 2 brothers, Clem and Cletus Durnwald; and 3 sisters: Josephine Heydinger, Mary Lucius, and Estella Gwirtz.

Friends may call at the Turner Funeral Home 168 W. Main St. in Shelby on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. where a wake service will be held at 8:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 10 A.M. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. John C. Missler as celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bethlehem. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Shelby Home and Public Health.
