Martha L. (Stine) Scherer
Martha L. Scherer, age 89, of 4671 West Smiley Avenue, died Tuesday morning in Shelby Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She was born July 13, 1902 in Shelby, the daughter of the late Samuel and Sadie (Souder) Stine.
Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Scherer taught in several one-room school houses in Richland County. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Ruth Gleaners Sunday School Class at church, Hazel Grove Ladies Aid Society, and a long-time member of the Hazel Grove Grange. She taught Sunday School for many years and was the secretary-treasure in the old Sharon Township Schools.
Mrs. Scherer is survived by 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Dr. Robert and Mary Lou Scherer, D.V.M. and John and Doris Scherer all of Shelby; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 sister: Dana Stine of Plymouth.
She was preceded in death by her husband Henry Scherer in 1970; an infant daughter in 1940 ; a son Richard in 1946; and 1 brother: Victor Stine; and 3 sisters: Rachel Beeching, Mary Hutchinson, and Lucia Carrick.
Calling hours will be on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Turner Funeral Home where funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:30 A.M. with her pastor the Rev. Dr. Carl L. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
Memorial expressions may be made to the First Lutheran Church and left in care of the Turner Funeral Home.
