Lugarda Jane (Doolittle) Ferrell
Lugarda Jane Ferrell, age 94, of 1757 Myers Road in Shelby, died Saturday
evening in the Heritage Care Center. She had been in failing health for the last 7 months.
She was born March 7, 1899 on a farm in Madison Township, Richland County, Ohio the daughter of Herbert O. and Artie J. (Mottayaw) Doolittle.
Mrs. Ferrell attended Kent State Normal School and was a graduate of Ashland College. She retired in 1969 after teaching school for 34 years. She taught at Northview (Madison Township #2), Yankeetown (Madison Township #1), Hedges, Newman, John Simpson, Five Points, and Union schools.
She was a member of the Pleasent Valley Baptist Church where she had been a teacher of the adult Sunday School Class for many years. She was a member of the Richland County Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Ferrell was also a member of the Ganges Grange and Union Grange #1648 where she served as lecturer for many years. She received the Golden Sheaf certificate from the National Grange for continuous membership for over 50 years. She had also been the advisor for the Sewing Sisters 4-H Club for many years.
Mrs. Ferrell is survived by 2 daughters: Janice Cooper of Shelby, and Carolyn Flenner of Yuma, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Dewey Ferrell in 1974, by a son-in-law, Darvin Cooper in 1992 and by 4 sisters: Ruby Doolittle, Marjorie Burkholder, Lois Heilman and Edith Bishop.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 3-5 and 7-9 P.M. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. by Pastor Donald Cox, Pastor of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Shiloh.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church or to the American Heart Association and left in care of the Turner Funeral Home.
