Lillian Ray Bowman

Lillian Ray Bowman, age 78, of 133 West Main Street, Shelby, died Thursday evening April 24, 2003 at Oak Grove Manor Nursing Home in Mansfield.

She was born April 11, 1925 in Grayville, Illinois. Miss Bowman was a 1943 graduate of Ashland High School and received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Ashland College and a Masters in History degree from Northwestern University. She was a geography, world and American history teacher at Shelby Senior High School for 35 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shelby where she had been an elder, a member of the choir and vice moderator of Presbyterian Women. She was a member of the Ashland College and Northwestern University Alumni Associations, Shelby Education Association, Ohio Education Association, and the Shelby Sesquicentennial committee. She was a worldwide traveler. She enjoyed climbing mountains out west and spent several summers working at Yellowstone National Park.

Miss Bowman is survived by a personal friend, Harryet Snyder of Shelby; a sister, Leigh Strom of San Diego, CA; 3 nieces, Sally Branch of Auckland, New Zealand, Deborah Swanson of Poway, CA and Mary Craig of El Cajon, CA; a nephew William Joseph of Eagle, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin Dee Bowman and Ann (Latimer) Bowman, and by a nephew, Guy Joseph.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, April 28, 2003 at 10:30 AM at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with her pastor, Rev. James Smith officiating. Calling hours will not be observed. A memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church will be announced at a later date. Memorial expressions may be made to the Shelby Y Community Center, the church, or to the Arthritis Foundation in care of the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, Ohio 44875.
