L. Edith (West) Huston
I will extol the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips. Psalm 34 was L. Edith Huston’s favorite scripture chapter. Edith, a long time Shiloh and Shelby resident, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Alterra Sterling House in Mansfield. She was 92.
She was born January 20, 1918, in Quaker City, Ohio, the daughter of the late V. Dale and Ethel (Brown) West. She grew up in Belmont, Ohio, where she graduated from high school in 1936. Edith was a 1940 graduate of Baldwin Wallace College where she majored in Latin and minored in Greek, English and physical education. In her senior year in college she was voted the outstanding woman student. Edith was very athletic as she played basketball for four years in high school and four years in college.
She married Earl Huston in Temple, Texas in 1943.
She taught Latin and English in Belmont, Shiloh and Shelby and retired from Shelby City Schools in 1977 after 30 years of teaching. During her years of teaching at Shelby High School, Edith was the advisor to the Shelby Latin Club. This club of 160 members was well known throughout Ohio and neighboring states as well. Her Latin students sent Edith to Rome in 1973 as a thank you for her many years of leadership.
Edith was an Ohio Jennings Scholar in 1972 and was nominated in 1976 for Ohio Teacher of the Year. She served on the Ohio Classical League Board and was a charter member of the Mansfield Christian Business and Professional Women’s Council where she served as chairman. She shared her testimony of her love of the Lord throughout the area. Edith and her late husband, Earl, donated part of their farm land to build the Shiloh Wesley Evangelical Church. As a founding member of the church, she served as pianist/organist and choir director. She memorized over 100 Bible verses and claimed their promises. After moving to Alterra, Edith enjoyed playing the piano and worshiping at the Hanley Road Baptist Church in Mansfield.
Earl preceded her in death in 1998 after 55 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her brother William West and son-in-law Terry L. Russell.
She is survived by her two children: Roderick (Vickie) Huston of Mansfield and Karen (Richard) Mott of Shelby; her grandchildren: Laura Russell Reinbolt, Megan Russell (Dave) Shook, Kerri Huston (Scott) Mitchell, Jodi Huston, John (Theresa) Mott, Michelle Mott (Riley) Post, Steve (Jenny) Mott; 8 great grandchildren; a foster son: Howard (Evelyn) Worrell of Ohio; a brother: Harry West of Las Vegas; several cousins including, Jean Thom of Strongsville.
Friends may call on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 AM at the Wesley Evangelical Church, State Route 603, Shiloh, with Pastor Troy Diersing officiating and Pastor John Burghard sharing. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Shiloh. Memorials may be made to Wesley Evangelical Church of Shiloh, Hanley Road Baptist Church of Mansfield, or Hospice of North Central Ohio. On-line condolences may be made at penwellturner.com
The family would like to thank Edith’s long time family physician, Dr. G. David Long, whom she adored and the Sterling House staff, especially Val, Bev and Latonda for their loving care.

Some of my best memories of Shelby come from my time with the Latin Club in 1970’s. As I get older her dedication to her students amaze me more everyday. How many teachers would take a large group of teenagers to Columbus for the weekend to a state Club meeting. These great experiences led me to an Air Force ROTC Scholarship at Ohio State and the first in my family to graduate from college. I now live in Spokane Washington so her influence has spread across the country. She also taught my mom, dad and aunts in Shiloh.

Mom and I were so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Mom. We both have such great memories of her both through the church and me in school. I am a firm believer that we have Angels on earth and she was one of them. I will never ever forget being in her choir at church. She just made everything so beautiful. She is with her Lord now and Mom being the same age will one day be able to see her again and chum together. Our hearts are with you all through these difficult times.

I called her “Pete.” I am not sure why, but I do know it was a term of endearment, and that one word probably describes Edith best. She was so full of faith, and understanding, and forgiveness, and love, that even without that contagious smile, she endeared herself to everyone who had the good fortune to know her. I had the good fortune to be her brother.

To Karen and all of Ede’s family, my sincere condolences. I loved that lady from the day we met on the faculty of Central School. The fact that we came from neighboring towns got us off to a great start as friends and from that grew an ongoing, growing friendship. Whenever I got back to Shelby, Edith was high on my list of those to be sure to see. She was a dear friend and a fun lady. My regrets at her passing. Jan
PS That wonderful smile was captured in the photo accompanying her obituary. Thanks

To the loved ones of Mrs. Huston,
I was saddened yet had happy thoughts as I read of the passing of Mrs. Huston.
Recently I saw the article about her at Hanly Rd. Baptist Church. I looked closly at the photo to be sure this was “my” Mrs. Huston. Sadly, I did’t know her time was so short then
as I wanted to visit with her. Now I’ll have to wait til heaven.
My memories of her back in the 60″s are of a neatly dressed woman in a tailored suit, high heels, earings, etc. Teachers dressed so professionly then.
Ahh – memories of Latin Club – we were draped in bedsheet togas, reclining, feeding each other grapes, spouting Latin. What a hoot!
She was a wonderful teacher who made the “dead language” alive.
Sadly, you will see few if any of her students at the funeral but know that there are HUNDREDS of us who would smile and nod appreciatively at the mention of the name, Edith Huston.
Sincerely,
Joan Barber Jones

Coach Rod & Vickie Huston,
What a testimony your mother’s obit. is for our Savior, let alone the life that she led. My mother just sent me this today so I wanted to take time between school and parent/teacher conferences tonight (remember those days?) to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with you! Thanks for always being a tremendous Christian role model for me in my life as I’m sure your mother was for you. I’ll always be thankful & grateful, as you’ve been instrumental in where I’m at and what I’m doing today – most importantly, my relationship with Jesus Christ!

Want to send my sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers to Mrs. Huston’s family. Still can’t call her Edith as I too had “Mrs. Huston” for 3 years of Latin at SHS 1972 to 1974. She clearly stands out as one of my favorites and a teacher that always enjoyed her job and had the passion that seems to be dearly missing from many of today’s educators.
To be honest I can’t remember why I first decided to take Latin as my foreign language of choice, but I can tell you that the reason I took it for 3 years was her. She was not only a teacher, but a friend and friendly which isn’t true of many in her profession. She will be sincerely missed. May God Bless.

We have lost a dear, dear lady. Her smile, her red hair, her friendly disposition, her laugh……that was Edith. She was one of my favorite teachers although I hated Latin. I only took it because of Edith…..and I thought she would be easy on me but I soon found out differently. The one Latin phrase that I do remember is “ego amo te” …… which means I love you. And Edith was so very easy to love. So with that, please accept my sympathy in the loss of your mother. She was one of a kind.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.Edith was a true role model to so many. She has touched the lives of so many is a true testimony to her faith. I was a young girl who found the lord and we proclaimed our faith by a singing group called the:gospelets: Edith took us under her wing and God’s message was carried on and a blessing to all of us. She was a friend as was Earl,{they complimented each other to a tee}.Although it had been years and very little contact, they both were continously in my prayers. It is because of your mother that my work in the church and in teaching high school was such a success. through her encouragement, I won at the State level in the Prince of Peace Speech Contest. It was because of her that those of us at Shiloh had such a wide variety of experiences in learning – drama, sports, and her example. It was because of her that so many of my students and parishioners were encouraged in much the same way. I will never forget her, ever. She lives in me and often my actions show it.
May you and yours find peace and continued love in this most marvelous lady’s loss. She’s one of a kind.
I was recently looking through my mother’s papers (Mary Jean Ferrell) and ran across a letter Edith sent our family upon my mother’s passing. How my mother loved her so. She frequently brought her to mind and spoke of how much she adored Edith. It was so kind of her to send our family that precious card of sympathy and I wish I could have been able to spend time with her. She left wonderful impact on so many people, and was a life well lived.
With loving appreciation, Jean Ferrell
