Joseph D. August, Sr.

Joseph D. August, Sr., 75, of 149 West Main St., died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at the Crestwood Care Center in Shelby after a long illness.

Mr. August was born August 30, 1923 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania the son of Joseph L. and Lillian (Murphy) August. He retired in 1988 from General Motors in Ontario after 28 years of service. Mr. August was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he was an usher for many years. He served a 15-year term as secretary of Shelby Moose Lodge #422, where he also held various other offices and achieved the Pilgrim Degree of Merit. He was a lifetime member of Shelby VFW George Broderick Post #291, a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Latrobe, PA, a member of Shelby American Legion Post #326, Shelby Masonic Lodge #350 F and AM, and was past secretary of Shelby Fraternal Order of Police Association. He was an
Army veteran of WWII serving in Germany and England from 1945-1948.

Mr. August is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peg” (Smith) August, whom he married on October 29, 1949; 1 son, Joseph. D. August, Jr. of Statesville, NC; 3 daughters and sons-in-law: Theresa and Robert Kinsey, Debra and Jimmy Keene and Renee and Brian Simpson all of Shelby; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; 2 brothers: Edward J. August of Zanesville, Ohio and Eugene August of Latrobe, PA; 1 sister, Rita Kuba of Latrobe, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers: George and Richard August.

Calling hours will be 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, Ohio where the Daughters of Isabella will recite the rosary at 4:30 p.m. and Pilgrim services will be held at 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Turner Funeral Home with Father John C. Missler officiating. Burial will be in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery with military honors by the Shelby VFW. Memorial expressions may be made to the Alzheimer Association.
