John H. “Herb” Ovens
John H. “Herb” Ovens, age 87, formerly of 69 1/2 West Main Street, Shelby, died early Thursday, March 4, 1999 at Gaymont Nursing Center in Norwalk, Ohio.
Mr. Ovens was born April 18, 1911 in Shelby, the son of J. W. and Verena (Gerster) Ovens. He retired in 1972 as a machine operator and carbon coder at the Shelby Sales book Company. He was a member of Most Pure Heart Of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby, Knights of Columbus Shelby Council # 1976, N.R.A., and American Legion O’Brien Post #326 in Shelby where he was a past commander and life member. He was an Army veteran of WWII where he held the rank of Master Sergeant.
Mr. Ovens is survived by a step-daughter and son-in-law: Michele and Jan Graves of Norwalk; step-son and daughter- in-law: Rev. Dr. Joel C. and Becky Hunter of Orlando, Florida; 5 step- grandchildren and spouses: Greg and Sandy Graves, Janell Graves, Josh and Lisa Hunter, Isaac Hunter, Joel D. Hunter; 3 step-great-grandchildren: David and Jessica Graves, and Noah Hunter; a sister, Marguerite Carner of Dayton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and his wife, Jean (Bashore) Hunter Ovens on June 6, 1971.
Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Turner Funeral Home, where a Christian wake service will be held Sunday at 7:30 P.M. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 8, 1999 at Most Pure Heart Of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby, with Father James Steinle and Rev. Dr. Joel Hunter, officiating. Burial will be in Most Pure Heart Of Mary Catholic Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Shelby American Legion.
