John Franklin Swartz
John Franklin Swartz, age 88, of 2495 Kaster Road, Shiloh, died early Friday, December 21, 2001 at Hillside Acres Nursing Home in Willard.
He was born October 7, 1913 on Hazelbrush Road, Cass Township, Richland County, Ohio, the
son of the late Cloyd Cleveland and Sara Letitia (Stambaugh) Swartz. He graduated in 1931 from Shiloh High School and attended The Ohio State University. Mr. Swartz farmed in Cass Township, specializing in growing potatoes and onions. He along with his son Dave marketed drainage supplies.
He was a 4-H adviser, had served on the Richland County Fair Board, Richland County Farm Bureau, and the Plymouth Board of Education. He was a member of the Messiah House of Prayer Church, the Plymouth Historical Society, and was very active in church affairs, serving as Sunday School teacher and superintendent. Mr. Swartz ran for state representative 3 times on the Republican ticket in the mid 1980’s.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine (Newsom) Swartz, whom he married in April of 2000; 4 sons and 3 daughters-in-law: Dave and Jean Swartz of Shiloh, Duane Swartz of Fremont, MO, Dan and Jaroon Swartz of Humpty Doo, Northern Territory, Austrailia, Dennis and Peggy Swartz of Buda, TX; a daughter and son-in-law: Damaris and Michael Rose of Ontario; 6 grandchildren: James Swartz, Thomas Swartz, Richard Swartz, Betsy Swartz Groff, Damon Clemans, Dirwin Clemans; 4 step grandchildren: Jessica Branham, Kimberly Ward, Dany Weaver, and Lucy Womach; 8 great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Wayne Hunter of Greenwich.
On August 16, 1936 he married Arleen Hunter Swartz, and she preceded him in death on January 3, 1997. Also preceding him in death was his sister, Margaret Peters.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, December 23, 2001, from 2-4 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, and on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 from 5-7 PM at the funeral home as well as one hour prior to the 11 :00 AM funeral service Thursday at the Messiah House of Prayer, 74 Pettit Street, Shiloh. The Rev. Ron Carey and Pastor Bill Howell will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Shiloh. Memorial expressions may be made to the church.
