John A. “Johnny” Metzger
John A. Johnny Metzger, age 88, of Seltzer Avenue, Shelby, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at his home.
He was born September 3, 1918 in Shelby the son of the late John and Edith (Dallas) Metzger. He was a 1937 graduate of Tiro High School and a Army veteran of World War II where he was a message runner to the front lines. Johnny was a 31 year employee of Ohio Seamless Tube Company in Shelby. After his retirement from the Tuby, he worked for Crest Binding in New Washington for 18 years. He was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Traditional Catholic Church in Sulphur Springs and was a former member of the Shelby Knights of Columbus. Johnny enjoyed the surroundings of his home either in the garden or tinkering in the garage.
A true handyman, he took great pleasure in helping his kids in any way.
John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dortha M. (Studer) Metzger, whom he wed on June 1, 1940; 5 children and spouses, Steve and Carol Metzger of Park City, KY, Don and Marilyn Metzger of Willard, Sharon Nedolast, Robert and Jeanne Metzger, Michael and Kathy Metzger all of Shelby; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; a brother, Herman Metzger of Crestline. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Paul, Dallas, Victor, and Cecil Metzger.
Friends may call on Friday, December 29, 2006 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where the rosary will be recited at 8:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2006 at 10:00 AM at Our Mother Of Perpetual Help Traditional Catholic Church in Sulphur Springs with Father James McGilloway, CMRI, officiating. Burial will be in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery in Shelby with military honors. Memorial expressions may be made to Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church for Masses.
