Jean Carol (Haines) Hulthen

Jean Carol (Haines) Hulthen, age 85, of Shelby, died Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the home of her son, Mark.

Jean was born November 17, 1926 in Greenwich, Ohio to the late Creston E. and Mildred (Miller) Haines. A graduate of Greenwich High School, Jean went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in education from Heidelberg College. She started teaching home economics in Tiffin Oh before teaching in a one room school house in rural Indiana while her husband finished school at Indiana Tech. She left teaching to stay home to raise her family. Once the boys were grown, she returned to teaching as a substitute. Jean was a very active volunteer for many things, including: Med Central Shelby Hospital Guild, Shelby Helpline Advisory Board, and was a Red Cross volunteer at blood drives. She was a member of the Shelby YMCA where she took aqua aerobics. Jean was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelby. She liked to sew, made the best pies and rolls, was an avid reader, enjoyed painting and art and relished walking with her sister, Beth.

Jean is survived by four sons: Mark (Ruth) Hulthen, of Stow, Michael (Lynn) Hulthen, of Medina, Martin (Amy) Hulthen, of Westerville, Matthew (Trina) Hulthen, of Copley; seven grandchildren: Tony Billman, Emily Hulthen, Kyle Hulthen, Alyssa Hulthen, Anne Hulthen, Laynee Hulthen, Temi Hulthen; a sister: Elizabeth Haines, of Shelby. She was preceded in death by her husband: Malcolm Richard Hulthen, in 1987; a sister: Christine Haines; a brother: Robert Haines.

Friends may call on Thursday, May 31, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Funeral Services will be on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 11 am at the First United Methodist Church in Shelby with Rev. Tom Snyder officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmont Cemetery in Tiffin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Summa, 444 N. Main Street, Akron, Ohio 44310 or to the Shelby Hospital Guild.
