James L. Hughes
James L. Grandpa Hughes, age 89, of 67 Third St. Shelby, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 3, 2003 while visiting the grave of his wife in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby.
He was born May 22, 1914 in Buffalo, New York, the son of the late James Michael and Alice (Foster) Hughes. Jim was a retired employee of AMF and the Ohio Steel Tube Co. in Shelby. He also managed the Rhythm Bowl in Shelby for many years, and was a member of the Shelby Owls Club.
Fondly known as Grandpa Hughes by many, he loved to write poetry and tell stories. He shared his stories as a frequent visitor to schools and child daycare centers and would bend the ear of anyone willing to listen. He loved all children, and especially enjoyed visiting his own grandchildren and their families. Jim was an avid sports fan and a great card player.
Surviving are 2 sons and daughters-in-law, James P. and Jean Ann Hughes of Upper Sandusky, Daniel J. and Emily Hughes of Shelby; 4 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Linda Caulfield of Buffalo, N.Y., Mary and Greg Dodge of Shelby, Ellen and Mike Kirkpatrick of Reynoldsburg and Rose A. Hughes of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a brother, Richard Hughes of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Elizabeth Betty (Pease) Hughes on Aug. 22, 1998, a son-in-law, Richard Caulfield, 2 brothers, Charles and Edward Hughes and 2 sisters, Alice and Margaret.
Friends may call on Monday, July 7, 2003, at the Turner Funeral Home 168 W. Main Street, Shelby, from 4-8 P.M. where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 A. M. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.
