James Herbert Payne, Jr.

James Herbert Payne, Jr., age 59, of 79 Mansfield Avenue, Shelby, died Thursday, September 20, 2001 at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus after suffering a heart attack at home on Wednesday morning.

He was born August 31, 1942 in Coldiron, Kentucky. Mr. Payne has worked the last 25 years for General Motors in Ontario as an electrician and was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church, Local 24 International Brotherhood of Electrical Engineers in Baltimore, MD , United Auto Workers Local 549 in Mansfield, Shelby Masonic Lodge #350 F and AM and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, and hunting.

Mr. Payne is survived by his wife, Ethel (Saylor) Payne, whom he wed on May 9, 1977; 2 sons: William T. Saylor and James M.B. Payne both of Shelby; 2 daughters and a son-in-law: Wanda and Derrin Roberts and Jayme M. Payne all of Shelby; 2 brothers and a sister-in-law: Michael Payne of Shelby and Bruce and Wilma Payne of Manchester, TN; a sister: Mossie Sue Payne of Shelby; his mother, Mattie M. (Howard) Payne of Shelby; his mother-in-law, Susie Helton of Molus, KY; 5 grandchildren: Mariah, John, and Isaac Roberts, Kelsie and Thomas Saylor all of Shelby; 4 nieces; aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Herbert Payne, Sr.; a son, Johnny Ray Saylor Payne on June 15, 1989; and 2 sisters: Joyce and Wanda Payne.

Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where Masonic services will be conducted at 8PM Sunday. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 PM at the Stiving Road Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Monty Perry, officiating. Burial willbe in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with military honors. Memorial expressions may be made to the OSU Heart Center.
