Jacque LaVerne Kaler

Jacque LaVerne Kaler, Sr., age 81, of 7626 Andrea Lane, Portage, Michigan, and formerly of 19 Woodland Road Shelby, died Thursday, June 25, 1998 at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Mr. Kaler was born July 24, 1916 in Shelby the son of Perry Clinton and Marie (Scott) Kaler. He was a former mayor and councilman for the city of Shelby and retired in 1986 from the Shelby Mutual Insurance Company. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelby. In 1993 he moved to Michigan to be close to his family. He attended the First Assembly of God Church in Kalamazoo, where he was active in mission work. Mr. Kaler was a member of the Portage, Michigan Masonic Lodge and was active with the American Red Cross.

Mr. Kaler is survived by his daughter-in-law, and her husband, Myrna and John Huizinga of Portage, Michigan; his grandchildren, Theresa Kaler and Matthew Kaler both of Portage, Michigan; brother and sister-in-law, Scott and Katherine Kaler of Austin, Texas; 2 nieces Karen Simon of Lake Tahoe, California and Kathy Holmes of Irving, Texas; 2 sisters-in-law, Blanche Knight and Eleanor Kilgore both of Shelby. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred (Sidle) Kaler in 1991 and by a son, Jacque L. Kaler, Jr. in 1987.

Calling hours will be on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby. Graveside services will be on Monday at 10:00 A.M. at Oakland Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Matthews officiating. Memorial expressions may be made to the American Red Cross or to the First United Methodist Church in Shelby.
