Henry Clayton Mayer

H. Clayton Mayer, age 93, formerly of 47 Marvin Avenue, died Friday evening in Southwest Mississippi Hospital, in Mc Comb, Mississippi, after a sudden illness.

Born April 4, 1897 in Shelby, the son of the late William and Dessa (Nimmons) Mayer, he lived in Shelby most of his life and was a 1915 graduate of Shelby High School. Mr. Mayer retired in 1954 as vice president-works manager at the Ohio Steel Tube Company after 39 years of service. He was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1904 where he served as chairman of the general board for 53 years.

He served on various boards of directors for many years, including those of First National Bank of Shelby for 28 years; Ohio Seamless Tube; Shelby Building and Loan; Community Chest; and Shelby Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Mayer was the first president and founder of Shelby Area Development Corporation, a 40-year member of Shelby Rotary Club, where he served as president, and the general fundraising chairman for Shelby Memorial Hospital for many years.

Mr. Mayer is survived by a son, Dr. William T. Mayer of McComb, Mississippi; 5 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen (Thomas) Mayer in September 1989.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home and one hour before 3:00 p.m. services at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lyle Hinkle, pastor. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorial expressions may be made to the First United Methodist Church and left in care of the funeral home.
