Harold Dean Onie

Harold Dean Onie, age 72, of 20 West Tucker Avenue, Shelby, died Saturday, February 15, 2003 at Village Care Nursing Home in Galion after an extended illness.

He was born January 29, 1931 in Shelby and was a 1950 graduate of Shelby High School. He served in the United States Navy in the Korean Conflict. As a young man he worked for the electric department for the city of Shelby for 9 years. He worked 31 years as a claims adjuster, beginning his career at Shelby Mutual Insurance Company, retiring in 1993 from Anthem Insurance Company. He was a member of The First Church of God, American Legion O’Brien Post #326, and V.F.W. George Broderick Post #291 all in Shelby. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. Since his retirement, he and his wife, Boots, enjoyed spending the winters in Texas.

Harold is survived by his wife, Mary Boots (Brown) Onie, whom he wed on November 23, 1950; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Carl S. Dorsey of Shelby; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Dianna Onie of Shelby; 6 grandchildren and spouse: Carrie and Paul Zehner, Christy DeVito, Curt Dorsey, Carla Dorsey, Brittany Onie and Tristan Onie; 3 great grandchildren: Alexis Manning, Camryn and Nathan Zehner; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Jewell Onie of San Antonio, TX and Jack and Jean Onie of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Andy Alfrey of Escalon, CA; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Jim Yetzer of Shelby. Harold was preceded in death by his father, A.T. Foreman, his mother, Hazel (Markle) Markwell, 2 sisters, Eileen Spangler and Mary Louise Ward, a brother, Pete Onie.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 AM with Rev. Tim E. Schrock officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad. Memorial expressions may be made to Shelby Help Line Ministries and left in care of the funeral home.
