Gary Frederick Sand

Gary Frederick Sand, age 73, of Shelby, died Monday, July 16, 2012 at Crestwood Care Center.

He was born October 13, 1938 in Mansfield, the son of the late Carl Frederick and Evelyn M. (Grau) Sand. He was a 1957 graduate of Shelby High School where he played football and was named to the N.O.L. first team defense. Gary was a self-employed auto body man and had been employed at Don Murray Ford and Walt Ray Motors in Shelby. He served 22 years with the National Guard at Mansfield Lahm Airport retiring in 1983. For twenty years he was in the sunflower sign business and for forty years he had been a land lord in the Shelby area. He enjoyed photography.

He is survived by 3 sons: Michael Sand of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Mark (Jennifer) Sand of Lexington, Steve Sand of Columbus; 4 grandchildren: Jarrad (Samantha) Sand, Courtney Sand, Jordan Sand, Jasmine Sand; a sister: Judy (Ronald E.) Norris of Shelby; niece: Angie Moyer of Ontario; nephew: Brian Love of Tuscon, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 AM on Friday by Chaplain Major David Shirley of the 179th Airlift Wing. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with military honors provided by the 179th Airlift Wing. Memorials may be made to Quilts of Valor or to Socks For Soldiers.     I retired from the 179th in 1981, Crew Chief , Gary
    & I worked together many yrs. He was on my crew many a
    trip to Alpena.
    Gary was a good man, he’l be missed by many !!
    I see where he has a nephew in Tucson. AZ. It’s
    going to be storming here today. We live in Sahuarita.
    Az. 25 Mi South of Tucson.
