Garland J. Gates, Jr.

Garland J. Gates, Jr., age 72, of 12 Clark Avenue, Shelby died at 11:14 a.m. in the emergency room at Shelby Memorial Hospital after an apparent heart attack. He was born May 12, 1916 in Galion, Ohio the son of Garland Wesley and Bertha (Briner) Gates.

Mr. Gates is survived by his wife, Iona (Johnston) Gates, whom he married on May 15, 1942; 4 sons: David of Sidney,OH; Garland of Shelby; Bruce of Beverly Hills, CA; and Carl of Columbus; 1 daughter: Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Saltzgaber, Jr. of Ashland, OH; 4 grandchildren.

Mr. Gates was a retired employee of the Richland County Highway Dept. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Shelby, was a past member of Shelby City Council, was a member of the Shelby Area Democratic Club. Mr. Gates was the first freshman to play varsity football
at Shelby Senior High School.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Church of Christ with his pastor the Rev. John J. Bradley officiating. Burial will be in Sandusky Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home.
