G. Deming Seymour

G. Deming Seymour, age 84, of 7392 Guthrie Road, Shiloh, Ohio died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at Med Central Mansfield Hospital after a short illness.

Deming was born June 2, 1919 in Rootstown, Ohio the son of the late Frederick Parker and Alice (Petersen) Seymour. He was a graduate of Rootstown High School and received both his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education in 1946 and Masters of Science in Agriculture Education in 1951 from The Ohio State University. Mr. Seymour was the Richland County 4-H Extension Agent for 23 years and prior to that was the vocational agriculture teacher in Shiloh and in Preble County for nine years. He was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Force serving as a pilot in WWII. Mr. Seymour was an active member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church where he was a Lay Leader and chairman of the Administrative Board for many years. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma, agriculture fraternity; Gamma Sigma Delta, agriculture honorary fraternity; OSU Presidents Club, P.E.R.I. #84 and A. B. Graham Club. He was a life member of Epsilon Sigma Phi, National County Agents Association, and National Association of 4-H Extension Agents. Mr. Seymour was a Gold Sheaf member of the Shiloh Community Grange #2608, where he was the Legislative Chairman; having joined the Ravenna Grange #32, sixty seven years ago. He was a member of Shelby AARP Chapter #2791, where he was the Legislative Chairman; receiving the AARP award in 1992 for Outstanding Service to the Community. In 2000, Deming and his wife, Betty, served as Grand Marshals of the Richland County Fair. They enjoyed their retirement and used their time to travel extensively. Deming loved following the Ohio State Buckeyes and always fondly remembered his trip to the 1950 Snow Bowl game. He enjoyed volunteering and helping wherever he could. Through the years, one of Deming’s greatest joys in life was hearing about the many successes of his former 4-H students.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Grace Betty (Peterson) Seymour whom he wed on June 14, 1947; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Gordon Hansen of Minier, IL; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard and Vicki Seymour of Muncie, IN; 2 grandsons, Eric Nicholas Hansen and Ryan Donald Seymour; a sister, Eleanor McConnell of Ravenna, OH and a brother, Dr. L. C. Bliss of Shoreline, WA.

Friends may call on Friday, June 6, 2003, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2003 at 10:30 AM at the Shiloh United Methodist Church with his pastor, Rev. Linda Heinlen officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Shiloh.
