Fred S. McKinney, Sr.
Fred S. McKinney, Sr., age 91, formerly of East Maxwell Drive, Shelby, died Friday, December 21, 2007 at the Good Shepherd Home in Ashland after a short illness.
Fred was born June 9, 1916 in Sharon Township, Richland County, Ohio the son of the late John D. and Mary R. (Sprague) McKinney. He was a 1935 graduate of Shelby High School. Prior to 1950, Fred was a partner in the McKinney Brothers Company as a plasterer with his brother Dale. After that, he worked for 29 years and retired from the Shelby Mutual Insurance Company. . He was a 70 year member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelby where he was past president of the Administrative Board. He was also past president of: Shelby Jaycees, Oakland Cemetery Association, Richland County Regional Planning Commission, Richland County Township Association. He was a member of Shelby Masonic Lodge #350 F & AM and was Past High Priest for Shelby Chapter #178 RAM. Fred served as the Sharon Township Clerk for 7 years and as a township trustee for 8 years. Fred was instrumental in forming a co-operative insurance program for the 18 townships in Richland County. This co-op enabled the townships to have adequate coverage in all necessary lines – a forerunner of the current OTARMA Program. When his sons were young, he was Boy Scout cub master at Auburn School, when the first pack was formed. Fred enjoyed farming, woodworking and fishing. In 2006, Fred was crowned Richland County Fair King. Fred was a true gentleman and made friends easily. After breaking up housekeeping and moving to Elmcroft of Ontario, he became an active member of the activities there and will be missed by the many new friends he made.
He is survived 3 sons and spouses: Fred Jr. and Linda McKinney of Ashland, Malcolm J. and Cheryl McKinney of Deerfield Beach, FL, Todd W. and Peggy McKinney of Alton, New Hampshire; Step Children: Gary and Janet Keller of Shelby, Barbara and Robert Lederer of Knoxville, TN; 5 grandchildren: Heather Cahoon, Colin McKinney, Amelia McKinney, Jesse McKinney and Alicia Trisciuzzi; 7 step grandchildren: Natalie Canaday, Reid Lederer, Jennifer Deraad, Erik Schneeg, Garett Schneeg, Michael Schneeg, and Mark Schneeg; 8 great grandchildren; Sister-in-law, Betty McKinney of Shelby.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Harriet M. (Rose) McKinney, his second wife, Pauline (Weaver) Keller McKinney, a brother, Dale McKinney and daughter-in-law, Karen McKinney.
Friends may call on Friday, December 28, 2007 from 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby and also on Saturday from 10 – 11 AM at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday by Rev. Gail Angel. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Masonic services will be conducted Friday evening at 8 PM.
