Florence F. (Sutter) Hafer
Florence F. Hafer, age 82, of 85 Raymond Avenue in Shelby, passed away Wednesday morning at Mansfield General Hospital after an extended illness. She was born July 25, 1911 in the Shelby Settlement the daughter of Henry E. and Anna (Cowl) Sutter, both deceased.
Florence was employed on two occasions at Shelby Business Forms, retiring from there in 1976. She was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, a charter member of the local Daughters of Isabella Circle, the Altar and Rosary Society at church, the Shelby A.A.R.P., and was a long time member of the Shelby Area Democratic Club and worked 25 years as an election poll worker.
In the early 1960’s Florence and the late Evelyn Kerley and the late Irene Loescher as well as Bertha Hoehn were the original nucleus for social functions at the then new Knights of Columbus home on Vernon Road. These women along with other ladies of the K of C catered numerous wedding receptions, class reunions and group functions. Proceeds from their efforts equipped the kitchen and made other improvements in the K of C home.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Harold J. “Bud” Hafer, a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and William Zawie of Parma, Ohio; a son, Henry E. Hafer of Shelby; 2 sisters, Sister Mary Joan S.N.D. (Loretta) of Thousand Oaks , California and Cecilia Gardner of Strongsville, Ohio; 2 grandchildren, Gregory Zawie and Karen Zawie both of Parma, Ohio. 9 nieces and 11 nephews.
Florence was the seventh of nine children. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Sister Mary Rosalind S.N.D. (Helen) and Mae Metzger and 4 brothers, Father Edmund C. Sutter M.S.C., Paul F. Sutter, Norbert J. Sutter, and Charles J. Sutter.
Calling hours will be on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby where a Christian Wake service will be held Friday at 8:30 p.m. Following the wake service the Daughters of Isabella will recite the rosary. Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church with her pastor Father John C. Missler, officiating. Burial will be in Most Pure Heart Of Mary Catholic Cemetery.
