Eugene J. “Gene” Spangler
Eugene J. “Gene” Spangler, age 70, of 2944 Taylortown Road, Shelby, died Monday afternoon, April 13, 1998 at I.H.S. of New London at Firelands after an extended illness.
He was born March 28, 1928 in Now Bavaria, Ohio the son of Peter Bert And Frances (Ensman) Spangler. Mr. Spangler was a 1947 graduate of Holgate High School and retired from Carton Service in Shelby in 1990 after 43 years of service. He was a member of Most Pure Heart Of Mary Catholic Church and Shelby American Legion O’Brien Post #326. Mr. Spangler was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in Okinawa. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was a sports enthusiast, having coached Little League for many years. After his retirement he made wooden crafts. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in all their activities.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette T. (Fisher) Spangler, whom he married on June 19, 1954; 3 sons and 3 daughters-in-law, Gary and Debby Spangler, Ron and Linda Spangler, Doug and Leslie Spangler all of Shelby; 2 daughters and 1 son-in-law, Debra Spangler, Linda and Ed Whited all of Shelby; 9 grandchildren, Bryan, Kevin, Laura, Scott, Eric, Brandon, Megan Spangler , Lane and Alexi Whited; a brother, Raymond Spangler of Ottowa-Glandorf, Ohio; 2 sisters, Joann Jones of Defiance, Ohio and Edna Tobe of Ottowa, Ohio; his mother-in-law, Loretta Fisher of New Washington, Ohio.
Calling hour will be on Thursday, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby, where a Christian Wake service will be held on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Most Pure Heart Of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby with Father John C. Missler, Officiating. Burial will be in Most Pure Heart Of Mary Catholic Cemetery. Memorials to St. Mary School or to the charity of the donors choice.
