Elmer T. Reed
Elmer T. Reed, age 87, of Bendle Ave., Shelby, died Friday, October 20, 2006 at his home after a long illness.
He was born April 14, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio the son of the late Charles C. and Minniella (Rice) Reed. He graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in Youngstown. He was an Army Veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater and the Battle of The Bulge. He retired in 1984 from Quanex as superintendent of maintenance; Prior to that, he worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. He was a member of the Shelby Masonic Lodge #350 F&AM and Shelby American Legion O’Brien Post #326. He was a volunteer at Auburn Elementary School, with his wife, helping children read. They were lovingly referred to by the students as Grandma and Grandpa READ. He taught Country Western Pattern Dancing at Auburn School and at the Senior Center.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia M. (Homack) Reed, whom he wed in November 1945; 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Wilbur Green of Plymouth, Kathy and Bob Cline of Shelby, Maribeth and Jim Baldridge of West Liberty; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Kay Reed of Shelby; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a sister, Edith Ferrando of Youngstown. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Megan Paulo, 2 brothers, William and Thomas Reed and 2 sisters, Clarinda Reed and Emma Guynan.
Calling hours will not be observed. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Plymouth with Bill Leding, Chaplain of Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail, officiating. Military honors will also be conducted by the Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial expressions may be made to Med Central Hospice, 335 Glessner Avenue, Mansfield, Ohio 44903. The Turner Funeral Home, Shelby, assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
