Elizabeth H. “Betty” (Flickinger) Smith

Elizabeth H. “Betty” Smith, age 61, of 14 West Madison Avenue, Shelby, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, in Arthur James Cancer Hospital at the Ohio State University in Columbus after a short illness. She was born June 2, 1935 in Alliance Ohio the daughter of Gustav and Katherine (Kunz) Flickinger.

She was a 1952 graduate of Alliance High School and received a bachelors degree in education from Kent State University in 1956.

Mrs. Smith was a teacher for over 22 years, having taught in the Parma, Ohio City Schools and the Rochester, New York City Schools. The last 18 years of her career she was the second grade teacher at Russell elementary School in the Shelby City School System, retiring in 1995.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Shelby, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Rizpah Chapter #153 Order of Easter Star, Ohio Education Association, Richland County Retired Teachers Association, Shelby A.A.R.P., and Mohican Coachman Chapter #20.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, G. Desmond Smith whom she married on June 23, 1957; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Gary Lemmon, of Hagerman, Idaho and Katherine and Mark Harris of Grand Blanc, Michigan; 1 son and his fiance, Matthew Smith and Chris Jordan of Shelby; 5 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 3 brothers and 2 sisters-in-law, Gus and Anne Flickinger of Port Orchard, Washington; John Flickinger of Lake Jackson, Texas; and Willi and Sue Flickinger of Canton, Ohio; nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby, were Eastern Star services will be held at 8:30 P.M. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Shelby with Rev. James Humphrey, officiating.

Memorial expressions may be made to the Shriner’s Childrens Hospitals or to Russell Elementary School in Shelby and left in care of the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, Ohio 44875.
