Douglas Edward “Doug” Eidt

Douglas Edward Eidt, age 37, of 7164 Remlinger Road; Crestline, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at home after an 8-year battle with melanoma cancer.

He was born January 26, 1965 in Shelby and attended Sacred Heart School in Bethlehem, Shelby Settlement. He graduated from Buckeye Central High School and Pioneer Career and Technology Center in Diesel Mechanics in 1983 and Northwest Business College in Lima specializing in Diesel Mechanics. He was employed at Weidner Motors in Mansfield for the last 18 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bethlehem, National Rifle Association and was a volunteer fireman for the Tiro Fire Department. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling. His hobbies included restoring tractors and cars.

Doug spent seven years with the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland in the
cancer research program, and credits them for extending his life. He was an inspiration to other cancer patients.

He was a devoted father to Jill Victoria Eidt and Emily Danielle Eidt; also surviving are his mother and stepfather, Betty (Rieman) and Tony Gwirtz of Crestline; 2 brothers and sisters- in-law: Stephen and Lynda Eidt of Galion and Kevin and Arlene Eidt of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and David Paynter of Crestline; his paternal grandfather, Earl F. Eidt of Galion; a step-brother, Allen Cass Gwirtz of Shelby; 3 step-sisters: Myra Snider of Sunbury, Kathleen Miller of Shelby and Alita Cramer of Wapakoneta; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Eidt in 1989; his maternal grandparents, Albert and Mary (Niese) Rieman, and paternal grandmothers, Lina (Weithman) Eidt and Pat Eidt.

Calling hours will be on Friday, May 3, 2002, from 3-5 and 7-9 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where a Christian wake service will be held at 9 PM. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 4, 2002 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:30 AM with Father Nick Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorial expressions may be made to the Douglas Eidt Family Trust Fund or Sacred Heart Church.
