Dorothy M. (Auck) Deruy

If you looked up the definition of lady in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Dorothy M. Deruy, according to her husband, Bob. Dorothy Auck met the love of her life, Robert H. Deruy, while she was working at Wilkens Air Force Depot in Shelby. They were married on November 21, 1953 and enjoyed 58 years together as residents of Shelby, until her death on Sunday February 19, 2012 at the Hospice House Inpatient Unit in Ashland. She had only been sick one month.

Born January 9, 1935 in Chatfield, Ohio the daughter of the late Omar and Lorretta (Durnwald) Auck, Dorothy was a 1952 graduate of Chatfield High School. Dorothy worked at Sears in the Richland Mall, from which she retired. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and vacationing in Myrtle Beach. She and Bob spent 18 years wintering there and had many friends that became their second family. Dorothy’s passion, however, was her family and she loved them dearly. She treasured time spent with them especially attending all her grandchildren’s activities. Her family feels that to know Dorothy was to love her.

Along with her husband, Bob, Dorothy is survived by 2 sons: Robert C. (Viki) Deruy of Shelby and Michael E. (Paula) Deruy of Powell; 5 grandchildren: Cari (John) Gauld of Brewer, ME, Keli Deruy of Perrysburg, Courtney Deruy, Mitchell Deruy and Alexis Deruy all of Powell; a brother: Donald (Mary) Auck of New Washington; 2 sisters: Marilyn Patrick of Newark and Marcella Tuokola of Bucyrus. She was preceded in death by a brother: Edward Auck and twins sisters: Sandra Burns and Linda Rhoden.

Friends may call on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 from 5-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial expressions to Hospice of North Central Ohio or to Shelby Help Line. To share a memory or a condolence please visit

Our condolences to all. Dorothy and Bob had a profound effect on my life as child. Dorothy and Bob were always there to listen and support me during difficult times. I remember sitting on their front porch with them and Fluffy. The Johnson kids appreciated their kindness and understanding. I always thought of Dorothy and Bob as another set of parents to me. They were not just my neighbors but someone I really loved. Dan and Scout
