Donald E. Gies, Sr.
Donald E. Gies, Sr., age 71 of 111 Broadway, Shelby, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at the Crestwood Care Center after a short illness.
He was born July 6, 1932 in Mansfield. Don was a retired employee of Copperweld in Shelby after 44 years of service and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Amvets, Shelbyl Knights of Columbus Council 1968; A life member of Shelby American Legion O’Brien Post 326 and Shelby VFW George Broderick Post 291. He enjoyed woodworking, word puzzles and spending time with his grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Moyer) Gies, whom he wed on June 27, 1964; 4 sons and spouses, Donald Jr. and Melissa Gies of Owasso, OK, John and Cheryl Gies of Mansfield, Thomas and Michelle Gies of Columbus, Joseph and Heather Gies of Shelby; 2 daughters and spouses, Monica and Paul Depinet of Norwalk, Patricia and Ben Trausch of Sunbury; 14 grandchilren; His mother, Mabel Gies of Crestline; 3 brothers and spouses, Paul and Grace Gies of Shelby, David and Linda Gies of Bucyrus, and Richard Gies of Bucyrus; 2 sisters, Anna Mae Hall of Mansfield and Barbara Kilgore of Crestline. He was preceded in death by his father John Gies, a brother, George Gies and a sister, Alice Marie Gies.
Friends may call on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. The rosary will be recited Tuesday evening at 8 PM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 AM at Most Pure Heart Of Mary Catholic Church with Father Nick Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial expressions may be made to the church or to St. Mary School.
