Bertha Marie Wood, age 98, formerly of Broadway Street in Shelby, died Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Crestwood Care Center in Shelby.
She was born on December 28, 1913 in Plymouth, Ohio, the daughter of the late Willard and Oma (Akers) Pettit. Bertha was a 1931 graduate of Shelby High School and a graduate of Trevecca Nazarene University. She was a 36 year employee of the Shelby Autocall, and prior to that, had worked 6 years at the Shelby Spring Hinge. Bertha was a charter member of the Shelby Church of the Nazarene where she was very active, even playing softball on the church team at 80 years old! Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Shelby Helpline. The Turner Funeral Home is handling Bertha’s arrangements.

We moved to Briarwood Estates 21 yrs. ago next to Olie and Helen CHorpening and that is where we met Bertha. As a child of God her and I hit it off right away. We enjoyed each others company through the years..Three years ago I placed Mom in crestwood Care. One day I was walking Mom down a hallway and behold and door plate said Bertha Wood. We that began our fellowship where we left off.. I will greatly miss our sweet little but mighty Bertha.. She is finally home with Jesus. I go by her room and it sets empty. I thank you Lord for the gift of Bertha’s friendship…

Bertha was one of the kindest and giving people I’d ever met. I was introduced to Bertha by Olive Seitz, those two were such good friends back in the 80’s, loved listening to their stories. My grandmother, Martha Hall, moved to Shelby and was attending the Nazarene church, those 3 took a day trip to Amish country not telling anyone, I remember being worried sick. They had a great day that day, driving around til after dark! Bertha never forgot that story until recently, I visited her often at CCC, I reminded her and she just laughed, she loved to drive, going to church, eating lunch on Sundays at Shelby Hospital, taking care of anyone in need, she loved life. She will be greatly missed!

To the Family of Bertha Wood: Having known Bertha my entire life, many memories flooded my mind when I learned of her passing. She was faithful, kind and compassionate and especially loved children and children loved her. When my mother was at Crestwood, Bertha would often sit for hours with her when a family member could not be present, and was a constant friend and comfort to her. She touched so many lives in her walk on earth with her friendly disposition and Christian witness. May the family find strength and peace knowing that Bertha is finally Home and hearing the words “well done thy good and faithful servant.”

Bertha was our wonderful Broadway Street neighbor for 11 years. We met her while walking our dog: she was out working in her yard: which she did late into the evening almost daily. Her warm, friendly smile and loving, kind spirit won us over immediately. We spent many hours talking about everything. Her love of the Lord, Jesus; of life, learning, and people was very evident in all of our conversations. My daughter, Alexandra and my niece Heather adored Bertha and loved our visits at her home. She always made them feel included, welcome and important. We wouldn’t be there for long before Bertha would ask them if there was a game they would like to play (she understood how boring adult conversation could be to kids). So, there was many a time we spent with Bertha playing games like I Spy, charades etc…on a weekday evening. Bertha had more energy, love, and faith than anyone I’ve ever known. Any time we spent talking or visiting with Bertha was a blessing to our lives. We hope that we blessed her as much. Bertha Marie Wood: a mighty witness for Christ, a true and faithful friend and neighbor to all , a beacon of joy and love: Her bright smile and selfless ways will be greatly missed. But we take comfort from knowing that, thanks to our precious Savior Jesus, we will see her once again ! What a wonderful day of rejoicing that will be!

Bertha was such a sweet lady who would do anything for anyone. She was my children’s Sunday School teacher several years ago at the Church of the Nazarene. She will be missed but we will all meet again one day in Heaven!
May God comfort her family in their time of grief.
