Avon S. Clevenger
Services for Avon S. Clevenger, 76, of 4689 Davis Road will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Turner Funeral Home by his pastor, the Rev. J. Malcolm Brook.
Burial will be in Myers Cemetery, west of Shelby. Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may made to Trinity United Methodist Church through the funeral home.
Mr. Clevenger died unexpectedly Friday afternoon in Shelby Memorial Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home.
He was born Sept. 25, 1913, in Gilmer County, WV, the son of the late Alvin Merch and Ora Mae Kirkpatrick Clevenger. Before coming to Shelby in 1943, Mr. Clevenger taught elementary school in Ritchie County, WV. He was a retired dairy farmer and carpenter and had also worked at the former Wilkins Air Force Depot in Shelby. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; Carpenters Local 735, Mansfield; and the Myers Cemetery board.
Surviving are his wife, Eunice Furr Clevenger, whom he married May 26, 1938; two sons: Norman Clevenger of Shelby and Terry Clevenger of Saugus, CA; two daughters: Norma Sue Cleary of Livonia, MI, and Kathryn Clevenger of Sylvania; seven grandchildren; four brothers: Elton Clevenger of Letart, WV, Alvin Clevenger of Fairborn, Denzil Clevenger of Medina and Clifford Clevenger of Belpre; and four sisters: Ruby Wright of Orma, WV, Leoria Goff of Burnt House, WV, Zelia Moss of Parkersburg, WV, and Clara Jorden of Virginia Beach, VA. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Ann Clevenger; a son, Donald Clevenger; and three brothers.
